Your laundry room is one of the hardest-working spaces in your home. In fact, according to The Laundry Project, more than 1,000 wash loads are started in the U.S. every second.  However, due to the constant washing, drying, and sorting of clean clothes, your laundry room can quickly devolve into a large, cluttered mess.

To keep your laundry room spick and span, you need to have a system in place. While this may sound like a daunting task at first, you’ll find that it will be relatively easy to do.

1. Streamline Your Laundry Supplies

An organized laundry room starts by streamlining your supplies. Go through all of your laundry products, including detergents, stain removers, sponges, and drying sheets, and toss out any old or unused items. Next, group items into different categories.  For instance, keep all washing products in one bin and all drying products in another. Store your liquid cleaners in reusable glass containers to make it easier to know when you’re running low. Clearly label the bins so you know where every item is located.

2. Use Space-Saving Storage Options

Most laundry rooms aren’t sprawling with space. For this reason, it’s important to utilize every inch of square footage. Space-saving storage options make doing this a breeze. Install a fold-out ironing board that can be stored against the wall when not in use. Pull-out shelves and drawers can effortlessly store all of your laundry items while saving precious space. Take advantage of the empty space above your washer and dryer and attach a hanging rod where you can hang clothing that needs to air dry.

Bonus Tip: Remember to always air-dry your cotton button-down shirts. Since these garments can shrink easily, hang them on a drying rod.

3. Make a Spot for Dirty Laundry

Make a spot where you can divide dirty laundry. This can either be on top of your washing machine or on the top of a cabinet. Use color-coded mesh baskets to store delicates, colors, whites, and items that cannot be machine-dried.

Is your old, clunky hamper not cutting it? Buy a few smaller hampers of varying sizes. This way, you can stack them on top of each other so every family member has their own hamper.

4. Use Your Machine’s Exterior

There’s a lot of unused space on the sides of your machines. Get creative and use this empty real estate to your advantage. Affix a magnetic bin to the side of your washer to store cleaning products or give yourself extra space to fold laundry.

It’s also important to know how to properly fold laundry in order to save on space during the wash cycle. According to The Spruce, you can fold undergarments “vertically in half or thirds.” For pants without a crease, “fold along the center seams” and bring the legs together, with the pockets facing outward.

5. Take Advantage of Under-Sink Space

If you have a large sink in your laundry room, use the space underneath. You can stash large buckets, a bin of cleaning supplies, or spare tools.

6. Install a Pegboard

Do you live in a small home? Consider making your laundry room work double duty by installing a pegboard on one of the empty walls. You can use this pegboard to corral miscellaneous items, such as tools, mops, lint rollers, painting equipment, and other home improvement necessities.

7. Place a Rolling Cart Between the Machines

Do you have some space between your washer and dryer? Socks and other smaller items can easily get lost in this gap. To ensure nothing gets lost ever again, take accurate measurements of the empty space. Then, buy a small rolling cart that can fit into that gap. You can store less-used items on the cart and roll it out as needed.

8. Keep Your Most-Used Products Within Easy Reach

Have you ever wasted copious amounts of time trying to track down laundry products? Cut out the hassle and headaches by keeping your most-used items within easy reach. While it might seem tempting to tuck your stain removers and detergents in a bin, keep the products you’re currently using out in the open. Place them in pretty jars or bottles that are clearly labeled.

9. Keep a Stain Chart Handy

Stains happen, but particular stains have particular cleaning needs. For example, use hydrogen peroxide to remove blood stains and baking soda for sweat stains. Keep a stain chart in your laundry room so you know exactly what method to use for what stain. Create a chart on your computer, print it out, and then laminate it. Hang it on the side of your washer with a pretty magnet.

10. Have a Weekly Laundry Routine

To keep your laundry room organized, make a weekly schedule for every member of your family. Designate a day for each family member to do a load. This way, your laundry process will always be a well-oiled machine.

Conclusion

It’s important to keep your laundry room organized so you can effectively wash your loads. Make use of space, keep the most-used items within easy reach, and set up a weekly schedule. With these tips, you won’t ever have to fear laundry day ever again!
